Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) enable organizations to track the location, movement, and status of assets, inventory, vehicles, and personnel across indoor and outdoor environments. Passive and Active RFID technologies enable flexible real-time tracking based on the required range, accuracy, infrastructure, and application. Passive UHF RFID is ideal for identification and movement tracking across defined zones such as entry/exit points, warehouses, production areas, storage locations, and dock doors. Active RFID supports longer-range and more frequent location updates, making it suitable for tracking high-value assets, equipment, vehicles, and personnel. For applications requiring greater location accuracy or wider coverage, RFID can also be complemented with BLE, Bluetooth Angle of Arrival (AoA), and GPS. BLE and AoA support precise indoor positioning, while GPS enables outdoor and long-distance tracking.

An RTLS setup typically consists of three core components:

  1. RFID Tags: Passive or active tags attached to assets, inventory, vehicles, or personnel.
  2. Readers & Location Infrastructure: RFID readers, antennas, gateways, and receivers installed across required tracking areas.
  3. RTLS Software: A centralized platform that processes tracking data and provides location visibility, alerts, reports, and movement history.

How it Works

1. RFID Tagging

Assets, inventory, vehicles, or personnel are assigned unique Passive or Active RFID tags. Different tag types and form factors can be selected depending on the asset, environment, read range, and tracking requirement.

2. Identification & Location Detection

Passive RFID tags are detected when they enter an RFID reader's coverage area, enabling zone-level identification and movement tracking. Active RFID tags periodically transmit signals, allowing assets to be tracked across larger areas with more frequent location updates.

3. Location Data Collection

RFID readers, antennas, and gateways automatically capture tag IDs and movement events. Where more precise indoor positioning is required, BLE/AoA can be integrated, while GPS can support outdoor asset and vehicle tracking.

4. Real-Time Tracking

Captured data is processed by the RTLS platform to determine the current or last-known location, movement, entry/exit events, and status of tagged assets.

5. Dashboard & Reports

A centralized dashboard provides visibility into asset locations, movement history, inventory status, utilization, and activity logs. Reports can also be generated for audits, operational analysis, and asset management.

6. Automation & Alerts

The system can generate alerts for unauthorized movement, assets leaving designated zones, missing equipment, or delayed movement. Tracking events can also trigger automated workflows or integrate with existing ERP, WMS, and asset management systems.
